It Takes A Man: The Ugly Truth About Social Media, Sales and Your Business

By on July 26, 2013

It’s been 4 years since I started beating this dead horse.

But as long as the snake oil hucksters and the sometimes well-intentioned yet misguided social media gurus are spouting off about how you HAVE to use social media for your business, I’m gonna keep driving this point home when asked.

Before we dive head deep into these conversational waters, I’m gonna throw you a golden life preserver.

Early on in my career as an entrepreneur I dipped my toes into personal development. And one of the most profound lessons was when I learned *What it Takes* to be successful in life. Interesting thing I discovered is that what it was going to take to be successful in life was the same thing it was going to take to be successful in business.

For example: When I asked myself the question, “How do I become the kind of man that I am authentically proud of when I look in the mirror?”  The answer I found was simple. I would become that man by being that man.

or bluntly put,

“It takes a man (himself) being a man (cause can’t no one do it for him) to become a man.”

Now what in the heck does that have to do with marketing, social media or your business?

It’s this. Just because every city including Orlando now has their very own town crier yelling things from the roof tops like “Adapt or Die” to get you to start using social media doesn’t mean that you should be using social media for your business just yet.

Your business doesn’t need fans. It needs CUSTOMERS. The kind that pay you the green stuff–CASH paying customers. I know you may be doing some bartering so it’s important we’re clear that we’re talking about actual paying customers.

All the “likes”, “followers” and photo sharing in the world will make ZERO difference in your business if you’re not bringing home the money.

To make money it takes sales.

To make sales it takes a customer reaching his or her hot little hands into their pocketbook for their cash (or credit card, check…whatever you fancy) and paying for your products or services.

To get paying customers it takes marketing.

And if you’re not making more money than you spend on your business, or your cash reserves are so tight you would have to switch to being on a ramen noodle diet in order to pay for marketing, then I don’t recommend social media be your first pick for getting new customers now.
